Data Collection Incentives

Pay-for-performance systems are built on the foundations of adequate systems of data collection as well as the quality of data.

Systems that focus on meaningless measures or burdensome data collection systems may lack provider buy-in or participation. Recent research indicates that key state and payer strategies for implementing a successful pay-for-performance system work to overcome these barriers (Bremer et al., 2008 ; Pelonero and Johnson, 2007).

In Oklahoma, the state has implemented incentives designed to reward providers for their data collection/reporting efforts. The system rewards providers for submitting key measures (e.g., date of first contact) related to process improvement efforts within the state. Data incentives might also reward providers for the quality of their data submissions. Without adequate and accurate data, pay-for-performance systems are destined to fail before they are even launched.
